After questioning one of Aden's leadership decisions in Ana's absence, Pala is reminded of her lack of voice within House
proceedings due to her status as a new arrival. Pala decides that it is better to live or die on her own terms rather
than risk getting thrown in a cell by those she trusts due to a personal misunderstanding. Pala signs out and makes her way
to the Tin Roof.
She is followed by Khann, who wakes her up for a discussion outside the building, which rises to a cusp with Khann forcibly
kissing her. Much loud screaming and rock throwing results as the two discuss their emotions and attraction in a no words
held altercation of miscommunication. The two end up finally communicating in a language they both understand and share a
passionate kiss only to be interrupted by Krieg.
Krieg captures the two and they end up in a very small, suspended iron
cage somewhere in the Ebene stronghold. Close quarters and various misunderstandings due to missing clothing and unstable
footing sends tempers and fists flying. The two are introduced to Xinn, an Ebene officer assigned to work temporarily with
Krieg to eliminate the gap in the anti-magic field, which surrounds the Phoenix House.
Khann is forced to watch passively as Pala is subjected to Xinn's various experiments. Pala starts to rely on Khann's
support and company to get her through the experience, slowly learning to depend upon another person as the two share occasional
tender moments between the bickering. The two learn that Xinn has apparently developed a device that will cancel the protection
on the House for long enough to slaughter the resistance movement but only something with as much power as a Star's heart
can power it.
Khann manages to get the two out by melting the cage while Pala levitates. Khann learns a bit more about
Polarians and the two manage to escape through a window only to get into another argument. Pala wishes to continue on and
never return to the Phoenix House, but Khann realizes keeping her safe in the House, even if its against her will, is the
only option for anyone. Khann ends up carrying her over his shoulder back to the House kicking and screaming, only to lock
her up in the very basement cell she was seeking to avoid. Pala, properly pissed over the betrayal, and Khann, wishing to
maintain appearances, still have a long way to go before they reach any mutual communication.
